NICE(1) NICE(1) NAME nice, renice, nohup - run commands at low priority or immune to hangup SYNOPSIS nice [ -number ] command [ argument ... ] /etc/renice [ -number ] pid ... nohup command [ argument ... ] DESCRIPTION Nice executes command with low scheduling priority. If the number argument is present, the priority is incremented (higher numbers mean lower priorities) by that amount up to a limit of 19. The default number is 10. The super-user may run commands with priority higher than normal by using a negative number, e.g. `--10'. Renice increments the scheduling priority of the processes with the named process-ids by number. The default number is 19, making the process least likely to run. Only the owner of the process or the super-user may change the priority. Only the super-user may use negative incre- ments. Nohup executes command immune to hangup and terminate sig- nals from the controlling terminal. The priority is incre- mented by 5. Any output not explicitly redirected is appended to the file in the current directory. FILES default destination for standard output and standard error SEE ALSO nice(2) FILES (renice) DIAGNOSTICS Nice returns the exit status of the subject command. BUGS Quoted arguments don't work right in all cases. The diffi- culty may be avoided by quoting the command, with arguments NICE(1) NICE(1) in inner quotes.
